Debian is one of the oldest Linux distributions that is still under active development. Debian includes one of the largest package libraries with over 55.000+ packages available for immediate installation.

The distro Debian is used as base for quite a few other distros aswell, like Ubuntu, Linux Mint or SkoleLinux.

RedHat, CentOS and Fedora (RHEL family)

RedHat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) is a business focused distro. It's base for a lot of other popular distros like CentOS and Fedora.

CentOS is a free community driven fork of RHEL with full support from e.g. cPanel, Oracle, MySQL and a lot of other enterprise platforms.

Fedora Linux distros is desktop oriented, developed by the community. Fedora releases new versions every 6 months with official support up to 13 months.

Ubuntu

Ubuntu is an operating system forked originally from Debian. Started as a Desktop OS but has become a popular distro also on servers.

Ubuntu's Long Term Support (LTS) versions are released every 2 years, with security updates and support for up to 5 years.
